Acknowledgement of Country
Northform Health acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, learn and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.
I've spent the last decade in emergency response across Australia. A lot of that work happens in people's homes. NDIS participants' homes included.
As a first responder, you learn to read a room fast, and the same thing kept coming up.
In the homes where support was working, something was cooking, people were smiling. The other people in the house were just getting on with their day. Workers knew them. You could feel the trust before anyone said a word.
In the homes where it wasn't, you'd find a worker asleep on shift with no idea what the participant had been doing for the last hour (we've all seen that). Or a participant who'd stopped choosing their own dinner, because someone else decided the easier option was the safer one. Small choices taken away. One at a time. Until the day stopped belonging to them.
The difference comes down to preparation.
Did the worker know what mattered to the person before they walked in?
Did the paperwork describe an actual human being or a generic policy?
Had anyone thought about what to do when something went wrong, before it went wrong, with the participant's preferences first and foremost?
That's why Northform Health exists. NDIS providers need better tools to provide excellent care.
